Personality:

Isabela is a pirate queen, and according to her, pirates only care about a small number of specific things – the sea, strong drink and booty. Both kinds. If it doesn’t get any of the above, why bother? Rarely does she take anything seriously. She would freely admit that she really is that shallow.

Her former position as a pirate queen gives her an edge above other sailors. She shares her sailors’ greediness, but as their Captain, she carries herself with enough confidence to intimidate the president and enough toughness to hang out in a sleazy tavern without pants and not get molested once. She’s stealthy, street-wise and savvy with backroom deals. She gets into a lot of trouble but, well, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

There’s one thing that Isabela treasures more than anything, and that’s freedom. She thinks everyone has the right to be free. The idea of slavery and imprisonment make her uncomfortable, as does preaching and getting involved in other people’s affairs. It makes sense, given her background – she was sold by her mother to an asshole for a goat and a couple of coins.

This kind of lifestyle, while exciting on paper, doesn’t really do much in the way of fulfilment. Sure, she gets laid. Sure, she gets expensive jewelry. Sure, she has exciting stories to tell. But she doesn’t have friends that last, and lovers that actually love her. Her existence is hollow, and she knows it. Merrill once remarked that she was jealous of beautiful, adventurous Isabela and that she wanted her life, to which Isabela could only say, “you don’t want my life because you have a good heart and you deserve better.” She has an exciting life! …It’s just that, even if you can cover a snake in gold and glory, it’ll still be a snake.

Around this canon point, Isabela proves that she’s not as self-centered as she pretends. She makes friends with Hawke and abandons her to save her own hide… only to come back with the relic, claiming that she did it for her. Isabela’s friendship is hard-earned, but when you do, she has your back through thick or thin. Anders even points it out, and all she could say is, “take that back!” She has an image to protect, you know.
